SONIC TRIBE romps through world music, uniting the core musicians of the Soundings of the Planet label for a journey of high-spirited rocking and hypnotic trance. Electric guitarist Scott Huckabay is a key rocker; he can lay down a chattering riff for A. B.'s snorting didgeridoo and Daniel Paul's blistering tabla on "Circle 3" or wail liquidly as on the title track. Dean Evenson's flute and Phil Heaven's haunting viola weave mystical airs on the Middle Eastern flavored "Sahara Sunrise," with circling rhythms building up as the village stirs. "Sanctuary" shows Evenson's jazzier side, as his flute phrasings overlap, parry, and echo, tangling with the metallic twang of Huckabay's guitar. Several tracks feature the alluring vocals of Gina Sala and Rita Glassman; on "Siren of the Desert" they tangle over the warm sands of didgeridoo drone and expansive guitar. Though the SONIC TRIBE album is a compilation from previous recordings, the tracks have been enhanced to give the whole album an exhilarating, trance-like synergy, alive with the passions of the planet.
